The HAKKAKU Navy Chopsticks are part of a collection designed around the traditional Japanese octagonal chopstick shape. Hakkaku translates directly to “octagon” or “eight-sided”, referring to the eight flat sides running along the chopsticks.
The number eight is considered a symbol of good fortune in Japan. Its widening shape is associated with suehirogari, the idea of gradually expanding prosperity, growth and good fortune. This gives the eight-sided HAKKAKU design a meaning that goes beyond its distinctive shape.
The octagonal construction is also practical. Its multiple flat surfaces sit naturally between the fingers, creating a comfortable and controlled grip for everyday use. The flat sides also help prevent the chopsticks from easily rolling across the table when placed down.
Finished in a deep navy colour, the handles feature fine white lines forming a continuous loop. The continuous design takes inspiration from traditional Japanese knot and loop patterns, which can represent lasting bonds, connection and continuity.
Handmade in Obama City, Japan, these 23cm chopsticks are crafted from wood and finished with a polyester coating. They are dishwasher safe and feature square, anti-slip tips for greater control when picking up food, combining comfort, symbolism and everyday practicality.
