The Hajime Kuzuryu Black Chopsticks are part of the Hajime Inishie range, a collection that brings the traditional Japanese craft of Wakasa-nuri lacquerware into modern everyday dining.
Wakasa-nuri is a traditional lacquer technique that has been practised in the Wakasa region of Fukui Prefecture, Japan, for over 400 years. The process involves carefully placing materials such as mother-of-pearl, eggshells and decorative foils onto the wood before applying multiple layers of coloured lacquer. The surface is then carefully ground and polished to reveal the beautiful patterns underneath. The Kuzuryu Black Chopsticks feature a deep black finish with detailed patterns of gold, red and green. The mother-of-pearl inlays catch the light from different angles, creating a subtle shimmer, while the eggshell detailing adds texture and contrast to the design.
Each pair measures 23cm, with an acrylic coating on the handle and a natural Urushi lacquer finish on the tips. The textured tips help provide a better grip when picking up food.
Handmade in Obama City, Japan, these chopsticks reflect the skill and care that goes into traditional Wakasa-nuri craftsmanship. Each pair has its own unique details, making them both practical for dining and a beautiful example of Japanese craftsmanship. To preserve the lacquer finish and decorative details, these chopsticks should only be washed gently by hand and are not suitable for the dishwasher or microwave.
